master’s thesis: Moizcalia

Moizcalia

The paintings in this exhibition feature symbolic imagery, metaphysical themes, visionary scenes, and cultural references to explore social and spiritual moments. I use bright, bold colors to create striking, attention-grabbing figures. Wood burning and wood panels serve as both physical and metaphorical supports, and in some cases, nature itself undergoes a reshaping process. In certain works, I incorporate LED lights to create halos, illuminating the figures and their significance. I created these works to express my emotions, thoughts, and inner experiences because I believe self-expression through art is both a gift and a right.

The word “Moizcalia” in Nahuatl language defines “to come to life again, to be reborn, to revive, or nurture.”

What a journey it has been! Over the past two and a half years, I’ve reworked my path in the art world no fewer than seven times, striving to uncover my true voice. This process has taken me from tears to joy, from pain to triumph—a rollercoaster of emotions and experiences that remain hidden behind the closed doors of the studio. Being an artist is so much more than meets the eye; it’s about growth, mistakes, failures, challenges, and everything in between. Can I get an AMEN? 😂 Was it all worth it, though? Aside from the still-lingering student loans (yes, they’re still pending!), I wholeheartedly believe it was.

The word Moizcalia was born from a vision—a spiritual map etched in memory, culture, ancestral connection, expression, and more. Major themes such as identity, expression, and cultural exploration have deeply influenced the way I see myself and create. Indigenous representation was essential. Organic and authentic expression was essential. A bold, vibrant color palette was essential. Innovation to explore beyond traditional norms was essential. Several times, I have caught myself embracing what I considered finished. Layers upon layers of narratives, infused with intense emotions, were ever-present. My intent as an artist was to create artwork that would fill a space, such as the Spark Gallery, and allow the viewer to connect both personally with the experience and with the world around them.

And just like that, this chapter is closed for now. I’m not sure when the next opportunity will come to showcase these beautiful paintings together in the same space again. It’s something to look forward to, as the future holds the promise for an artist like me to be recognized for their true self.

In the meantime, enjoy some of the photos from the closing reception!

Until next time,
